Huge increase in gun and ammo sales
Compared to last year (2019) the sales of guns and ammo have drastically gone up. According to a survey conducted by the National Sports Foundation (NSSF), sales for ammunition have gone up by 139% while sales for guns have gone up by 95% compared to the same time period last year.
Nationwide, retailers have reported record numbers throughout this whole year. There have been a reported 10.3 million transactions for firearms in just the first half of the year. The NSSF survey revealed that retailers have reported 92% increase in ammunition sales and 87% increase in firearm sales.
Demographics
While the numbers are important to note, the demographic is also worth taking a closer look at. According to the survey the demographic of people who purchased guns and ammo consisted of the following:
55.8% White Males
16.6% White Females
9.3% Black Males
5.4% Black Females
6.9% Hispanic Males
2.2% Hispanic Females
3.1% Asian Males
0.7% Asian Females
NSSF Director of Research and Market Development Jim Curcuruto made this statement, "The highest overall firearm sales increase comes from Black men and women who show a 58.2 percent increase in purchases during the first six months of 2020 versus the same period last year."
The second largest firearm sales increase came from white men and women which was about 51.9% followed by Hispanic men and women at 49.4% increase and then Asian men and women at a 42.9% increase.
These numbers could be due to many different components, but it is most likely due to the civil unrest that continues to spread throughout the country. As things get more and more dangerous people seem to realize that arming themselves is more important now, more than ever.
